The overall priority goals for the Tribe center on improving the quality of life for tribal members and the community as well as the creation of a Tribal govenment known for its excellence in serving its members. Tribal philosophy for the balance between development and sustainable use of natural resources is based on the relationship between the eagle and raven. Both clans are different, yet live in harmony within the Tribal structure.

Rodney Hinson, Youth Services Coordinator

Rod Hinson is the Tribal Youth Coordinator for the Chilkoot Indian Association (CIA) under a contract between the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) and the CIA.

Born and raised in Arkansas, Rod fulfilled his life-long dream when he moved to Alaska in 2004. Rod owned a large farm in Northwest Arkansas where he raised poultry, cattle and did custom hay baling. After being diagnosed with severe lung problems related to the poultry, he sold the farm and went into law enforcement. This was due, in part, to the killing of a local police officer that was Rod´s best friend. He moved to Haines and worked as the School Resource Officer for the police department for three years and then worked for two years as a tour guide.

Soon after moving to Haines, he met and married long time resident, Rhonda Stuart. Rod has two adult children that are married and have families of their own. His son Buddy has a PhD in swine nutrition and lives in Missouri and his daughter, April, is a nurse living in Arkansas. Rod loves to hunt fish and kayak.

After graduating cum laude, I attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, completing the curriculum for a master´s degree in Alaska history and Tlingit culture. I have taught collegiate level courses both in Tlingit culture and Alaskan history. I was approved and directed through the University of Southeast, Sitka branch.
